Two Weeks in France and Switzerland

Did I book the most cliche place to have a honeymoon? Maybe. But was it still awesome? Hell yes. We celebrated so many things on this trip – getting married, Jon’s first trip to Europe and my first time planning a two-week international trip. And of course, I planned a bad ass trip.

Two weeks in France and Switzerland Itinerary

One of the best things about traveling around Europe is the train system. For most of the places, we were able to hop off the train and walk a few blocks to our hotel. I didn’t buy a Eurorail pass. I think we came out ahead on that, but I never did the math when we got back. I booked all the trains in advance. (See here for a comical how-to on buying train tickets from the U.S.)

Day 1: Fly to Paris – Jon found out he can’t sleep on planes even after drinking seven glasses of wine. Take a random taxi to our hotel.(Remind me to tell that story later. What an adventure). Take a nap and walk around Rue Cler
Day 2 -4: Paris – If you are going to be in Paris for a few days, buy the Paris Museum Pass and skip all the lines.  We crammed so much into so little time. Notre Dame, Musee d’Orsay, the Louvre (for literally 10 mins) Half day trip to Versailles. Laying in the lawn at Versailles.
Day 5: Beaune – LOVE. Biking between towns and stopping at wineries.
Day 6: Basel – On the way to Basel, we stopped in Dijon. Yes, like the mustard. They have this wonderful self-guided walking tour. Jon loved Basel. Walked around the city. Ate fondue. Found out I don’t like fondue.
Day 7- 10: Murren – A mountain town located above Lauterbrunnen. Hiked up the mountain. Hiked down the mountain. One day of not being able to move our legs from all the hiking. Rick Steves‘ recommendation for the win.
Day 11: Zurich – Walk around. Eat chocolate. Stayed out by the airport. Hotels are very expensive here, so I booked this one with Priceline’s express deals.
Day 12: Fly Home

Things I would do differently

  • Spend a whole day at Versailles. Buy the round-trip ticket like Rick Steves says to do. So you don’t wait in line on the return like a dummy.
  • Skip Zurich – but still buy some delicious chocolate from Sprungli.
  • Spend more time in Beaune
  • Bring allergy medicine. Jon was allergic to Dijon.
  • Go to Spiez. We trained by this town on the way to Murren. It looked incredible but we didn’t get a chance to stop there. My parents recently did a trip to Switzerland and stopped based on my institence. They said it was one of their favorite places.

Favorite part of the trip

  • Biking from vineyard to vineyard in Beaune. More wine, please.
  • Dijon
  • Murren

The Honeymooners. Look at how cute we are.
