A list of breweries for drinkers of blonde, wheat, hefeweizen and occasionally sour beer. With more than 30 Austin breweries, there are a ton of places to check out all over and each Austinite has their list of top beers. We’ve visited more than 15 breweries, but these are my favorite. I’ve organized the list from in town to north Austin. Check out the helpful map at the bottom of the post.
For those checking out breweries in May, be sure to join Barks for Beers, an event benefiting Divine Canines. You pay $30 and get a free pour at all participating breweries. Great excuse to drink beer for a good cause.
Blue Owl Brewing
Located in East Austin, Blue Owl Brewing is starting off the list with sour beers. I was going to explain how sour beers are made, but it’s above my drinking level. Jon is the real sour beer lover. His favorite blue owl beer is Spirit Animal. I like their Czech Czech. Note: You can’t just get one beer here. Get tokens and split with friends.
Pinthouse Pizza
Pizza and beer – Is there a better combination? (Ok, maybe Cheesies.) Pinthouse Pizza does both really well. I don’t have a favorite here because they have a huge selection of their beers and others.
Austin Beerworks
Austin Beerworks is our favorite Austin brewery. They have a great indoor and outdoor space. It has a big following and you can get their beer at most restaurants. My go-to beers are Pearl Snap (German-style pils) and Blood Sweat and Mostly Tears (blood orange gose).
Celis
Celis is my current obsession. We first checked it out during Barks for Beers, but I wasn’t crazy about them then. Now, I’ve had their Celis Raspberry beer. It’s the perfect lake/summer beer.
Redhorn Coffee House and Brewing
Okay, this one is a bit of drive for Austin visitors, but don’t count it out. It has everything you could want for a North Austin hang out – roast their own coffee, brew their own beer and frequently have live music. My go-to beer is the Wonder Boy Hefeweizen. (High above the mucky, mucky…)
